Lime Zest That Beats The Rest

Lovers of southeast Asian cuisine are likely familiar with Kaffir Lime leaves, popular in many Thai dishes for their sweet, citrusy flavor.

But did you know that the Kaffir Lime Tree also produces a tasty lime, too?

These limes are about the size and shape of the standard Western lime, though they are significantly bumpier and don’t produce much juice. Cooks instead grate the lime rind to add a kick of freshness to foods.

Even if you’re not interested in cooking with Kaffir Lime leaves or fruits, the Kaffir Lime Tree still makes

an attractive addition to your outdoor or potted planting.

The tree reaches five to 10 feet at maturity and produces lustrous, deep green leaves. These leaves are unusual in that the second leaf in a pair grows from the

end

of the first. In addition to limes,

the tree also sprouts small white flowers.

A full-grown tree is still delicate, though its leaves and branches can become bushier with regular pruning.

When determining whether your Kaffir Lime Tree should live inside or outdoors, it’s important to consider your climate. These trees do not tolerate cold weather, especially frost, and even if grown inside, prefers a consistent temperature of at least 60 degrees. It also likes full sun, so

if you plant it indoors, keep it near a bright window

. Further, the Kaffir Lime doesn’t thrive in wet soil, so choose a well-drained spot or planter. The tree also appreciates humid conditions while growing; mist it regularly if it seems dry. Be sure not to plant it right next to other plants, as well, as it doesn’t do well with other plants’ roots taking up its space.
